However, they all give list of materials, artists, including tutorials on the essential techniques used in jewellery making. Most of these magazines are for beginners and advanced alike, it is a great source of inspiration.

 I will like to make a disclaimer before going any further, I am not advertising neither am being paid by any of the publishers of these magazines. I am only a reviewer, which is in my capacity as a jewellery designer and tutor. I will offer only my honest opinion; however, this should not deter anyone from checking out these magazines, we all have different tastes, preferences, etc.

 I will advise that you check out your local shops, buy a copy as a kind of trial, they are not that expensive usually less than .  Alternatively, check out the sites, look at the contents of previous editions, or buy a copy of a previous (usually lower in price) edition before committing to a full year’s subscription. Sometimes you can decide just from looking at the contents on the publisher’s sites, I did with a couple of the magazines I subscribed to.

 Right without further ado, here are the most popular and favourite magazines. I have to state that most are US based with just a few from the UK; we do not really have that many compared to America and probably some other countries.

 1.                  Bead style Magazine:

This is undoubtedly the best magazine and a personal favourite, published bi-monthly. I like this magazine because it incorporates stringing, knotting and basic wire work, although, more of the first. The designs featured are suitable for all occasions, including a monthly birth stone project, the artists provide information on where to purchase the beads and materials used. There is also a directory of American shops at the last few pages.

 2.                  Beads and Beyond:

 This is the first UK jewellery magazine, available monthly; it features bead stitching, stringing and basic wire work projects.  I bought a copy from a bead shop about a year ago. I have to be totally honest, I was not impressed! I just thought the designs were too plain, nothing really ‘jumped out’ of the page for me. The magazine is still sitting under a pile of books! I can’t make a conclusion based on one copy because the publishers may have improved or revamped the magazine since then.

 3.                  Step by Step Wire

 For lovers of wire, who want to take their skills to the next level. A quarterly magazine   full of new, exciting and unusual designs; you will want to make the projects straight away. Definitely worth waiting another three months for your next copy, as it will give you time to finish and perfect your chosen projects, or even make more for your family and friends.

 4.                  Make Jewellery

 The newest bi-monthly UK magazine, larger in size than all the other magazines but packed with clearly written easy to understand (no step by step pictures) projects ranging from stringing to macramé, as well as wire work. In addition, it contains tips, expert advice/Q&A columns, fashion trends, etc. I am really proud that the UK has produced a magazine to rival Bead style magazine. There are also articles on tools, materials, beads, latest gadgets, for example, making polymer clay beads. They even send a member of staff or a volunteer to attend beading workshops which is reviewed on the last page. I could go on flattering this magazine. After the three month trial period, I subscribed for a full continue) year.

 5.                  Stringing

 Full of very beautiful designs which range from easy to more challenging projects this magazine packs in a lot of punch and should not be dismissed as just another magazine for the lazy jewellery makers; it has projects that reflect the season, for example, winter necklace. There is usually a section of 30 earrings or bracelets designs, they vary from editions. I will highly recommend this magazine, just like the above it does not have step by step pictures, but the written steps are very easy to follow.

 6.                  Art Jewelry

 This magazine is more suited for people who are interested in metal jewellery, soldering, metal smithing, clay metal, and other types of specialist ‘fire torch’ jewellery making.

 7.                  Bead and Button

 From the publishers of Bead style magazine, it is aimed at those interested in bead weaving, however, it incorporates stringing and wire work in some of its projects. This is not your standard beading magazine, this one is filled with ideas, tips, techniques, etc. If you are looking for inspiration this magazine does not disappoint.

 8.                  Bead magazine

 The only top beading magazine in the UK similar to the above, therefore I am not going bore you by repeating the review, unlike the other UK magazine I mentioned earlier, this is superior.

 9.                  Bead work, formerly Step by Step beads.

 Same as the last two, but with a delightful mixture of various techniques – bead weaving, stringing, wire, with the occasional knotting project. Once I have mastered bead stitch techniques I will start on some of the projects I have ‘marked’, they are really eye-catching.

 10.              Jewelry Crafts magazine.

 I decided to save this for last because it has every thing, it is a combination of all the magazines previously mentioned. It has polymer clay making, silversmithing, beading, wire, precious metal clay projects, lampworking, jewellery business information, etc.  If you want to explore all forms of jewellery making or you are trying to make up your mind on an area of speciality, this magazine is the perfect guide to help you make up your mind.  However, I will not recommend this magazine for a beginner, as it contains intermediate and advanced projects. It is in the same league as the Lapidary Journal – very professional.

In conclusion, I have listed my top 10 but there are so many more magazines out there. The contributing artists all give what I can only describe as funky, quirky titles to their projects, talk about being artistic indeed. There are also loads of sites to check out but I will not recommend any as I am not prepared to do a free promo for anyone, besides it could deemed as spamming which I totally hate!

 Have fun whichever magazine (s) you chose; just do not go buying every single one I listed!!
